That's the lesson behind a recent Journal of the American Medical Association study that compared the effectiveness of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet based on variations that lowered carbohydrate intake in favor of 10 percent more protein or unsaturated fats on about 160 adults, all with elevated blood pressure.
Researchers found both variations of the DASH plan worked better than the original, not surprising:
Some patients feel better with and need more protein in their diets.
The shift to unsaturated fats was due, in part, to olive oil, clearly one of the good oils you can consume.
The DASH diet emphasizes eating carbohydrate-rich whole foods like fruits and vegetables, not refined ones like grains and sugars.
